Today I'm joining Linda at Mocha with Linda for meme Flashback Friday~How and when did you learn to drive? Do you have any particular memories associated with getting your driver's license? How old were you when you got your first car and what was it?
My dad was in the military and we were stationed at Edwards AFB near Lancaster, CA where they were developing the space shuttle. I used to see it flying piggy back all the time when I was driving on the base and into Lancaster. Little did I know then that it was the next rocket to space exploration. Ok...back to the subject: I learned to drive when I was 15-1/2 years old through a Driver's Ed class at my high school which was free and a part of our education. Mr. Boyette, the PE teacher was also the Driver's Ed teacher. I drove with two other students(I don't remember who) and was a horrible driver at first. I thought 35mph was too fast and clipped a few curbs when I made a right hand turn. I remember taking my driving test and passing. I was so relieved.
My parents only had one car~a big old blue station wagon so that's what I drove when they let me. My girlfriends and I even went cruising our downtown in that big blue car! I clipped a few curbs in that car too. After I graduated from high school and got my first job at Bank of America I bought a beautiful sparkly green VW bug. I loved that car!! I found a photo recently and scanned it for you. This is circa 1976.

I loe that you have a pic with you and your first car. I don't think I ever bothered to take a photo of mine. My parents weren't camera people.
My first car was a tan VW, whiched was later painted a shiny green after my brother had an accident in it. This was an interesting post, especially since I think we might have been teens during the same time span. Loved the picture of you!
I clipped my share of curbs too! Amazing how 35 used to seem so fast! Of course now, driving with my teen, it seems it too!
I always wanted a bug! Thinking about learning to drive and how now I can appreciate it from my parents point of view...both of my daughters have had fender benders in the past year. Hoping they have fallen into the learning experience category of life.
Have a nice weekend!
I can't remember ever clipping any curbs. I was never allowed to drive my Mom's car always had to be my Dad's old pick-up truck.
Great story. Love the bug. Thanks so much for sharing. Have a great weekend. Blessings, SusanD
What fun to see a picture of you and the bug!
Thanks for playing along!
Ha! How fun! My Mom wouldn't let live under her roof and own a VW. She thought they were too dangerous. LOL. I never have owned one . . . but my sister did! She used to have to cover the engine compartment with plastic so the rain wouldn't get in when she wasn't driving it. LOL.
Cute picture Girl! Geez we were skinny in 1976 weren't we?
Today is my first day off all week. Mike is going to drive me bananas! Crack that whip!! LOL. But i sure can use the hours.
Very fun post!
HAGD! Karen
We had a big blue station wagon too!!!! But by golly back then, you could put two dollars worth of gas in that big old tank and drive forever!!!
Unfortunately I still clip curbs now occasionally...usually at drive-throughs.
I love that you have a photo with your first car!
Great story. My parents had a blue station wagon too and I managed to scrape the side of it along the rock wall of our flowerbeds one time.. Those cars just weren't built for right turns :)
look how cute you are! (and still are)
So your first job after graduating was with a bank and your first car was green in 1976.
My first job after graduating was with a bank and my first car was green in 1974.
isn't that funny.....
Oh how I LOVE that picture of you with your first car! It is true that most things come back around!!
LOVE VW bugs! We had one when we first got married. Then we got a VW hatchback.
What a great shade of green too!
I clipped a few corners of my own!!!
my best friend drove a VW bug..she was actually the one who taught me to use a stick shift.
Mom had a dodge dart swinger, I hated it, but I guess it was better than the rambler SW she had before. lol. I bet we are close to the same age. I turned 53 today, graduated in 75. Those were the years!
until next time... nel
I could have written most of this post. SoCal...15...driver's ed in high school...first car...Orange Pinto!
So much fun to remember! Things are sure different today!

One of my college roommates had a red VW. I even saw an old one today driving down the freeway - with the windows down since it was in the upper 90's! LOL
